Ficus

The legendary trees tropical Asia, where huge trees giving shade, with long aerial roots hanging down. In tropical rain forests protect the leaves from drying in hot sun, the wax layer. Young plants have to rely on meager light that penetrates to the ground. Therefore, the plants need less room in light. All kinds of small leafed ficus fits very well for shaping bonsai, because it creates a strong strain rapidly gently branching branches and evergreen leaves. Leaf size makes it ideal for medium and large bonsai. They are very resistant to hot dry air, and therefore are the best plants for bonsai room. LOCATION: growth of new small leaf ficus need, as well as other plants, plenty of light. Among the plants that are used for bonsai room, just fíkusům least light. They can therefore be far from the window. In the winter, requiring temperatures above 15 ° C and with proper watering well tolerated and dry and warm air. They like roots dry and warm, cold drafts resent them for prolonged ventilation and leaks in windows windowsill, which can anneal winter dish and soil. Watering: profusely after drying soil soft water. At high dose of lime react ficus chlorosis. Water in podmisce not be longer than 1 hour. As the stimulation of growth has dressing 40oC hot water (water temperature for swimming in the bathtub). The frequency of watering and yield is dependent, among other things. And on the type of ficus. FERTILISING: year-round after two weeks with liquid fertilizer. Transplanting: spring every second year, while making the cut root LAND: Substrate for bonsai AGRO CS, nutritious soil air or soil, peat and sand in the ratio 1: 2: 2nd CUTTING: If u want ficus keep the size of the crown, cut it 3 sheets deeper than the final outline of the crown. To make this intervention was not visible, we cut more often and fewer branches. Unless we want to lose sprouting, leave behind the last leaf a bit branch. Leakage of milk juice will avoid misting with cool water. In the winter, we remove the large leaves. Oversized crown in summer we can adjust radical zakrácením with defoliation. SHAPING: Wired whenever we can, but only for three months. The wire must timely removed because the branches and trunk rapidly growing.

Growing Guide: How to Care for a Ficus Bonsai and Master Its Shaping

A legend of tropical Asia, the indoor ficus bonsai is naturally highly adaptable to indoor conditions. Of all the plants grown as indoor bonsai, the ficus requires the least amount of light and tolerates the dry, warm air from central heating during the winter months exceptionally well.

Location, Light, and Stimulating Watering

Place the indoor ficus in a bright to partially shaded location. Although it benefits from ample light for producing small leaves (e.g., an east- or south-facing window), it can tolerate the greatest distance from a windowsill of any indoor tree. In winter, it requires a temperature consistently above 15 °C. Be sure to protect it from cold drafts and from the pot becoming chilled by the windowsill if the windows aren’t airtight, as this can damage the roots.

Water generously, but only after the surface of the potting mix has dried out slightly. Ficus plants like their roots to be warm and should not be left standing in waterlogged soil for long periods. A great, tried-and-true trick for stimulating vigorous growth and activating the roots is to water with warm water at a temperature of about 40 °C (a comfortable bathing temperature). Individual cultivars vary slightly: Ficus retusa 'Panda' can tolerate more drought, while Ficus neriifolia reacts to excessive watering by dropping leaves and taking longer to recover.

Substrate, Repotting, and Nutrition

To support a strong trunk and a healthy root system, choose airy bonsai growing media:

  • Substrate: For routine repotting and reliable nutrient retention, we recommend 2 liters of Bonsai Master potting mix. For a highly permeable, mineral-based substrate that prevents rot, choose 14 liters of Bonsai Master AK (3–3.7 mm), which contains a majority of Japanese Akadama.
  • Repotting: Repot young trees every 2 years in the spring, at the same time as pruning back the root ball.
  • Fertilization: From March through October, apply organic bonsai fertilizer every 14 days. For soil-grown plants, fertilize once a month.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ficus Trees (FAQ)

How do you prune and shape a ficus?

Ficus trees grow very vigorously. To maintain the desired shape and size of the crown, prune the shoots 2 to 3 leaves deeper than the final outline. Perform regular pruning using sharp pruning and shaping tools, which ensure clean cuts without crushing the tissue. A white, milky sap (latex) oozes from the cuts; you can easily stop the sap from dripping by dabbing the cut with cold water. We wire the tree carefully with aluminum wire and remove the wire within 2 to 3 months so that it does not cut into the rapidly thickening bark.

What should you do if your Ficus bonsai is dropping its leaves?

Mild leaf drop is a natural reaction to being moved to a new environment or a sudden decrease in light in the fall. If the leaf drop continues, the cause is usually overwatering combined with a reduction in leaf area (a tree with fewer leaves consumes less water) or a cold draft. Reduce watering, place the ficus closer to the window, and give it time for its dormant buds to awaken.

How can you encourage the growth of thick trunks and aerial roots?

Aerial roots, typical of Ficus retusa, develop in environments with high humidity. You can encourage the growth of new roots by regularly misting the trunk in the evening or by temporarily covering the area with a glass cylinder or clear plastic wrap, which will maintain a humid microclimate until the root takes hold in the growing medium.
