Kokedama

Kokedama literally means "moss ball" and is a fascinating way of growing plants without a traditional pot. This Japanese style of growing turns even the most ordinary houseplants into unique works of art. At e-bonsai.cz, we handcraft these decorative moss balls for you right in our centre in Libčany, using special mixtures of substrates that guarantee the longevity and health of the plants.

Kokedama as a modern Japanese decoration

Whether you are looking for an unusual gift or a stylish element for a modern home, kokedama is the ideal choice. You can let it stand freely on a platform or hang it in a space as a levitating garden. If you already have a kokedama and the moss layer has lost its colour after years, we offer everything you need to redo your kokedama from fresh moss to special kokedama soils. To promote lush greenery, we recommend using our proven kokedama fertilisers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long will kokedama last?

The lifespan of a kokedama is comparable to plants in regular pots. With proper care, it will last you several years. Eventually (usually after 2-3 years), it may be necessary to redo the kokedama, adding fresh potting medium to the plant and renewing the moss cover as the roots begin to outgrow the original ball.

How to care for the kokedama?

Caring for a kokedama is not complicated. The most important thing is to find a suitable place with plenty of diffused light and to keep an eye on its weight. Once the moss ball is dry and light to the touch, it needs a drink. We also recommend regularly misting the moss with a spray bottle to keep it beautifully lush and green.

How do I water the kokedama?

Forget the classic teapot. Kokedama is watered by soaking. We recommend immersing the entire moss ball in a container of stagnant water for 10 to 15 minutes until the air bubbles stop coming out. After that, let it drain (for example, in a colander) and you can return it to its place.
